The Mainframe Professional Should Understand Generative AI

Generative AI is relevant to IBM Z and z/OS professionals—even when they are not building AI models.

Why?

Because understanding a technology is different from being responsible for implementing it.

Generative AI can produce text, explain concepts, summarize information, and assist with drafting or exploring ideas. These capabilities may be relevant to technical learning, documentation, research, and other professional activities.

But understanding its limitations matters just as much as understanding its capabilities.

AI-generated explanations can be incomplete or incorrect. They do not replace system knowledge, authoritative documentation, approved procedures, testing, or professional judgment.

For mainframe professionals, the practical starting point is not to adopt every new tool. It is to understand:

• What Generative AI does—and does not do

• Where it may be useful in a professional context

• How to evaluate and verify its output

• Why information security and organizational policy matter

You do not need to build AI models to benefit from understanding the technology.

Technical knowledge remains essential. Understanding new tools helps us evaluate them with informed judgment.
